State municipal enterprise "Lutskvodokanal" in the preparation of drinking water renounce the use of poison gas.
This is said city chairman Nicholas Romaniuk during a presentation of the project "Reconstruction of drinking water disinfection in the water treatment plant Dubno water intake of Lutsk."

The transition to modern technology cost the company three hundred thousand hryvnia, and 220 of them have been allocated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in the framework of the national program "Drinking Water of Ukraine - 2011 - 2020 years".

- The project provides for the replacement of many years of drinking water disinfection using the new technology of liquefied chlorine - using the sodium hypochlorite, - said the director of "Lutskvodokanal" Ivan Korchuk. - This reagent is produced in situ and in the required amount of a solution of common salt by electrolysis. Clean water has now become a much safer, because we can eliminate the use of chlorine.

This gas, reminded event organizers, forever entered the history of the fact that during the First World War was used as a chemical weapon. But despite all the dangers that hide for people, it now applies to us as one of the cheapest and most effective means of disinfection. After chlorination it enters to the distribution networks of urban water supply systems.

As noted by chief engineer "Lutskvodokanal" Sergei Srok sodium hypochlorite for its disinfecting properties is no different from of chlorine, but safety in the work. With regard to its safety for humans, it is documented studies of poison control centers in North America and Europe. The substance in the working concentrations does not bear any serious health consequences, even after accidental ingestion or skin contact. Moreover - in the small concentrations used as a medicine. It is also confirmed that the sodium hypochlorite is not mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic compounds.

At the station of Dubensky water intake established hypochlorite electrolysis unit of the domestic manufacturer Ltd. "Bortek" capacity of 100 kg / day based on conditionally clean chlorine. Due to the low battery voltage electrolytic cells (12 V) the production process has become much safer for workers and the environment. To help the public utilities was the positive experience of the new technology on less powerful water intakes of Lutsk, in particular Yemelyanovsky and Gnidaevskom.

- We simultaneously solve two problems: safety and health. From now on, no more chlorine is used for disinfection of drinking water in Lutsk. And soon we will all lose him in the city - said city chairman Nicholas Romaniuk. - This will allow to abandon the the content of the expensive system of prevention and early detection of emergency situations in the household bleach. Soon we plan to implement another large-scale project - this time for water purification.
